Race Info…are you ready to tri?

Thanks for entering the Susan Bradley-Cox Tri For Sight! We’re looking forward to a great event on Sunday, October 5th. Here are all the details you’ll need to know for a successful race:

Tri For Sight will begin promptly at 7:15 a.m. Sunday morning with the Tri portion (Du portion to begin at 7:30.) Please pick up your registration packet at our tent near Bluegrass Community and Technical College (formerly Lexington Community College - across from the UK tennis courts on Cooper Drive) on Saturday the 4th between 10:00 am and 1:00 p.m. or 5:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Photo ID is required. All USAT athletes must present their cards or proof of membership if card is unavailable. Minors will need to have a parent present to sign the waiver. You must attend one of our mandatory pre-race meetings if you have never done the Tri For Sight in the past. They are offered at 10:30, noon, 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Saturday and will take place at packet pick-up. THERE IS NO RACE DAY PACKET PICK-UP WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL. If you cannot pick-up your packet or attend a pre-race meeting Saturday night, please call Beth Atnip, Race Director, at (859) 475-3313 or email: racedirector@triforsight.com to make other arrangements. Once you have received a packet it becomes your responsibility. We will have mechanics on hand both days for last minute adjustments!

Late registration will also be available at packet pick-up on Saturday, if the race is not already full. If the Triathlon is full we will suggest signing up for the Duathlon, so make sure to register early! There is no race day registration.

The transition area will open at 5:15 a.m., and will be located on the front lawn of BCTC. Please park in designated areas off of Cooper Drive next to BCTC. Volunteers will be on hand to guide you. Body marking and chip distribution will be adjacent to the transition area. All athletes should have their transition area set up by 6:30 a.m. and begin assembling in the pool balcony at 6:45 for any last minute announcements. Unfortunately, we can not allow warm-ups in the pool. Shortly before 7:00, we will file down to the pool deck in the order of seeding. You must be on deck and ready to enter the water when your number comes up; no late starts allowed. In the event of thunder/lightning we will delay the race until the weather clears. In the case of a long delay, we reserve the right to cancel the swim leg of the race. We also reserve the right to modify the bike or run course depending on road and weather conditions.

General Rules:

  1. Entries are not transferable or refundable.
  2. USAT rules apply. Unsportsmanlike conduct is grounds for disqualification. We have professional USAT officials who will be monitoring all aspects of the race, so please know these rules and follow them.
  3. No escorts, pacers, or personal aid stations. Water will be available on the bike and run courses.
  4. No alcohol, drugs, or stimulants before or during the race.

Transition:

  1. Athletes only in transition area. We cannot be responsible for lost articles.
  2. Please conserve rack space so that later arrivals will have room to set up.
  3. Since the bike starts from one end, and the run starts from the other end, there are no “best” spots in the transition area.
  4. Teams - The first member (swimmer) of a relay team must remove the chip/band and give it to the next member of the team inside the transition area. Bands must be worn around the ankle. The bike is then removed from the rack for the ride. On return, the cyclist must place the bike back on the rack before transferring the chip/band. Teams please use designated team bike racks.
  5. Absolutely no glass in transition area.

TRIATHLON:

Swim:

  1. No glass in pool area.
  2. Restrooms will be available in the pool balcony.
  3. Athletes should begin lining up at 6:45 a.m. in the balcony in the order of seeding (race number).
  4. Swimmers enter the water at 10 second intervals. As soon as the swimmer in front of you pushes off the wall, you will be directed to enter the pool, feet first. Wait for the signal from the starter to begin swimming.
  5. If the swimmer seeded in front of you hasn’t shown up, you will be asked to wait an “extra” 10 seconds so you start at your assigned time.
  6. Swimmers will swim down and back in each lane, always staying to the right in the direction they are swimming. At the shallow end of the pool, swim under the lane line to enter the next lane until you’ve completed all eight. Flip turns are optional.
  7. When passing, touch the swimmer ahead on the toes, then pass on the left toward the middle of the lane, or pass at the wall. Swimmers being passed should stay as far right as possible. You are responsible to watch for other swimmers and avoid collisions.
  8. Wet suits, fins, artificial propulsion or floatation devices are not allowed. Swimmers may touch the lane lines, but using a lane line to propel the body forward is grounds for immediate disqualification.
  9. As you exit the pool, WALK across the deck, follow the signs up the hill, past the basketball courts, across Cooper Drive to the transition area. You may leave shoes and other articles just outside the aquatic center if you do not want to run barefoot to transition.
  10. Since this is a pool swim, swim caps are not required.

Bike:

  1. No riding in the transition area. Bikes must be pushed in and out of the area to the mount/dismount line.
  2. Athletes must be 15 years or older to compete in the bike portion of the race.
  3. Helmet must be strapped on prior to mounting bike.
  4. The course will be well-marked, and police will be controlling traffic at major intersections. Volunteers will also assist in directing you. However, you are responsible for knowing the course. Detailed maps will be available at packet pick-up. There will be some active traffic along the route. You are also responsible for avoiding any debris or pavement irregularities.
  5. No drafting (riding within 3 bike lengths behind another athlete except while passing). Officials on bikes and motorcycles will be monitoring the race and may assign time penalties for violators.
  6. Ride to the right side at all times except when passing. Always pass on the left.
  7. Although traffic should be light, and athletes will be given the right-of-way at major intersections, there may still be active traffic on the course. Please obey traffic rules and use common sense.
  8. No headphones while biking.
  9. You are responsible for any mechanical problems on the course. Accepting aid from others results in disqualification.

Run:

  1. Please review the run course map at packet pick-up.
  2. Please keep to the right and pass on the left.
  3. Race number must be worn visibly, especially at the finish.
  4. No headphones while running.
  5. No pacing from non-participants.

Chip Timing / Finish Line:

  1. You must present your race number to receive a chip and band.
  2. The chip and band must be returned immediately after your finish. You will be charged a $30.00 fee for a lost or unreturned chip or band.
  3. Chips must be worn around the ankle during the race.
  4. Make sure you cross the timing mats throughout the race so that all your times will be captured.

Door prize drawings and the award ceremony will start shortly after the final athlete crosses the finish line. Again, thank for entering Tri for Sight. We hope you have a great race!
